The Compassionate Rewrite

A gentle touch-and-words practice for transforming negative inner talk

The Compassionate Rewrite is a simple practice designed to help you become aware of the words you repeatedly say to yourself, soften the emotional charge around them and begin consciously practising a kinder, more supportive belief.

We often repeat the same inner statements so frequently that they begin to feel like facts:

I’m not good enough.

I can’t do this.

I always get it wrong.

I’m not confident enough.

I don’t deserve this.

Rather than fighting these thoughts or pretending they aren’t there, The Compassionate Rewrite allows you to acknowledge the old message before gently introducing a new one.

The practice combines soothing touch, repetition and intentional language while connecting with two meaningful energetic centres:

The Heart Centre — associated with compassion, love, acceptance and emotional healing.

The Solar Plexus — associated with confidence, self-belief, personal power and our sense of self.

Together, they create a beautiful energetic intention:

Compassion for who I have been.
Belief in who I am becoming.

Before You Begin

Choose one negative thought or limiting belief that you have noticed yourself repeating.

Keep it simple and specific.

For example:

“I am not good enough.”

Now decide upon its compassionate opposite:

“I am good enough.”

You don't have to completely believe the new statement yet.

You are simply beginning to give your mind another possibility to practise.

Step One — Connect

Place one hand over the centre of your chest and the other over your upper abdomen/solar plexus area.

Take a slow breath.

Allow your hands to begin moving gently back and forth over these areas in a soothing, comforting rhythm.

There is no perfect speed or pressure.

Let the movement feel reassuring rather than forced.

Continue this gentle movement throughout the whole practice.

Step Two — Acknowledge the Old Belief

60 seconds

Begin repeating your existing negative belief aloud.

For example:

“I am not good enough.”

“I am not good enough.”

“I am not good enough.”

Continue for approximately 60 seconds.

You are not reinforcing or agreeing with the belief.

You are simply bringing an automatic piece of inner dialogue into conscious awareness.

Notice what happens as you say it.

You may become aware of an emotion, sensation, memory or resistance.

You don't need to analyse or change anything.

Simply notice.

Keep the touch gentle.

Keep breathing.

Step Three — Introduce the Compassionate Rewrite

60 seconds

Now change the statement to its compassionate opposite.

From:

“I am not good enough.”

to:

“I am good enough.”

Continue gently moving your hands while repeating:

“I am good enough.”

“I am good enough.”

“I am good enough.”

Repeat your new statement for approximately 60 seconds.

You don't need to force yourself to believe it.

Allow yourself simply to hear it.

Let your body experience what it feels like to be spoken to differently.

Step Four — Work With the Polarities

60 seconds

For the final minute, gently move backwards and forwards between the old belief and the new belief.

For example:

“I am not good enough.”

“I am good enough.”

“I am not good enough.”

“I am good enough.”

Continue alternating between the two statements.

As you do, notice the contrast between them.

Notice how each feels in your body.

Notice whether one begins to feel heavier, older or less certain.

Notice whether the compassionate statement begins to feel even slightly more available.

There is nothing you need to make happen.

You are simply allowing both possibilities to be present while consciously choosing which one you want to nurture.

For the final few repetitions, leave the old belief behind.

Finish only with the new belief:

“I am good enough.”

“I am good enough.”

“I am good enough.”

Complete the Practice

Allow your hands to become still.

Take one slow breath in.

And a longer breath out.

Then repeat your compassionate belief one final time:

“I am good enough.”

Pause for a moment and notice what you feel.

You might experience a significant shift.

You might notice only the tiniest softening.

Or you might feel no obvious change at all.

All of those responses are okay.

This practice isn't about forcing yourself to think positively.

It is about recognising that the old voice is not the only voice available to you.

Every time you practise, you are creating space for a different conversation with yourself.

Remember

You do not have to hate the old belief in order to release it.

You do not have to completely believe the new belief in order to begin practising it.

And you do not have to change everything today.

Sometimes change begins simply by noticing:

“This is how I have been speaking to myself…

and I am ready to speak to myself differently.”

Not sure what to change your negative inner talk to?

Sometimes we know exactly what we don’t want to keep saying to ourselves… but finding a kinder, more supportive belief can feel a little harder.

That’s where this little tool can help. 🩷

Simply type in the negative belief or piece of inner talk you’ve been noticing, and it will create a more positive, compassionate alternative for you to use in The Compassionate Rewrite.

You can keep the suggestion exactly as it is, or gently edit the words until they feel right for you.

You don’t have to fully believe the new thought yet — you’re simply giving yourself a new possibility to practise.

The Compassionate Rewrite

Type the negative belief or piece of inner talk exactly as you hear it in your mind. We'll gently turn it into a kinder, more supportive belief to use in your practice.
